
23 Striders run at Writtle in the NESS League XC
The first fixture of the NESS league XC took place at Writtle University College yesterday (Sun 29th Oct). Fab running from everyone and our club finished in third place! There were 106 women and 171 men in the event in total.
The first Strider home was Luke Fitz-John for the men and Sarah Overington for the women.
As we hosted this event we also would like to thank all of the volunteers that gave up their time to make the event happen.

A fantastic turnout at the Essex XC event
The 2nd fixture in the Essex League took place on Saturday 28th October at Gloucester Park in Basildon. Fantastic running from everyone; the first strider home was Jackie Stretton in the ladies race, finishing in a time of 30:19 and 7th position. Chris Burgoyne led the striders out in the men’s race, finishing as the first strider and 9th overall in a time of 30:47.
The next fixture is at Writtle University College on Saturday 4th November. (Ladies race at 12pm and men at 12:45pm) Pre-entry is required via Roster Athletics.

Striders Success at Chelmsford Running Events…
15 Springfield Striders took on the full marathon in Chelmsford today (Sun 15th Oct), whilst 18 took on the half marathon.
The marathon was won by Aaron Hudson of South London Striders, in a time of 2:41:10 with new striders member, Gareth Carey in 2nd position and close behind in a time of 2:43:00.
Springfield Strider, Nikki Woodyard was the first female home, in a time of 3:02:57, followed by new club members, Emma Prideaux and Rosa Prideaux, both running 3:11:18 and taking 2nd and 3rd female positions.
The half marathon was won by Ryan Willmott of Herne Hill Harriers, in a time of 1:16:09. The first male strider home was Phil Nippard in a time of 1:31:32.
For the females, Hannah Mcgowan-Jones (unattached) was first in a time of 1:21:02, closely followed by Springfield Striders, Jackie Stretton (2nd: 1:25:02) and Nicole Frisby (3rd: 1:27:27).
Special mention must also go to the men’s club captain, David Rayner for shaving almost 9 minutes off his half marathon PB and finishing in a time of 1:56:21.

Essex League Cross-Country off to a flying start…
Saturday 14th October marked the start of the Essex League XC races, with One Tree Hill setting the scene for the first race of the season.
Five Striders Ladies represented the club in the 6k race, with 141 ladies running in total. Charlotte Barnard finished as the first Springfield Strider home and 30th position with a time of 28:56. The team, made up of Charlotte, Emily Smith, Imogen Ovenden and Karen Beazeley finished in 11th position overall.

Over in the men’s 8k race, nine Striders men represented the club, with 257 men running in total. Alex Benson was the first Springfield Strider home, in 82nd position and a time of 32:53. The team made up of Alex, Scott Dryden, Paul Broome, Robin McCoy, Dean McLeod and Mark Jeffrey finished in 13th position overall.

Tiptree 10 (Essex Championship Race)
Well done to the 25 Springfield Striders that ran the Tiptree 10 today (Sun 8th Oct). The race, celebrating its 35th year is run over a predominantly flat, scenic, and rural route, with a couple of hills in the last two miles!

The event was won by Shane Boxall from City of Southend AC in a time of 53:26, closely followed by Springfield Strider, James Rygate (54:34) taking second place.
The first female home was Lydia Callan of Colchester Harriers in a time of 62:40. Springfield Strider, Nicole Frisby was the 3rd female in a time of 65:29, gaining herself a well-earned PB.
The men won the first team, made up of James Rygate, Jonathan Hughes and Paul Miles, all running under 60 minutes and gaining themselves Essex Gold medals.
The ladies won the third team, made up of Nicole Frisby, Imogen Ovendon and Charlotte Barnard earning themselves bronze Essex medals.
Congratulations to Jonathan Hughes, Peter Chubb, Rebecca Pittman and Lynn Tanner for winning Essex medals in their age categories.

Southend 10k (Essex Championship Race)
15 Springfield Striders took on the Southend 10k today (Sun 1st Oct). Starting in Southchurch Park, the course is a flat, out and back, traffic-free route along Southend seafront towards Shoeburyness, also incorporating a section on the wide footpaths of Gunners Park.
The first Strider home was Lee Martin, in a time of 35:40, closely followed by Paul Miles,(35:58) and Peter Chubb (39:04).
Nicole Frisby was the first female strider home, in a time of 39:30, followed by Imogen Ovenden (43:07) and Isobel Gowers (45:41), all earning themselves PB’s!

More success at the Langham 10k…
Eight Striders took on the Club Championship 10k race in Langham this morning (24th Sept). The overall winner was Finn Rattray of Colchester & Tendering (CATs) in a time of 34:10, and the first female was Claire Jacobs of Hadleigh Hares AC in a time of 35:41.
Christopher Purse was the first male strider home, in a time of 42:50, making him the 10k club champion. He was also the first v60.
Emily Smith was the first female strider home, in a time of 44:27, making her the 10k club champion. She also won first fv40. Lynn Tanner was the first fv70, in time of 55:54.
Emily Smith, Isobel Gowers and Hilda O’Kelly won the first female team.

Striders winning streak continues in Maldon…
Eight Striders took on the Maldon Half Marathon this morning (24th Sept). This undulating course, which is in its fifth year starts in Maldon and continues into the Essex Countryside. The event was won by Kurtis Swan of Braintree and District AC in a time of 1:12:16.
The first female home was Springfield Strider, Jackie Stretton in a time of 1:28:57. closely followed by team-mate, Sarah Overington, who finished as second female in a time of 1:29:50.
Jackie and Sarah, along with Claire Collins and Jenny Barrett won the first female team.

Trophy Scoop at the Ingatestone 5
Ten Springfield Striders ran at the Ingatestone 5 yesterday (Sunday 17th September), fortunately the temperatures were a little cooler than the XC races!
Imogen Ovenden finished as 2nd female, (and the first strider home) in a time of 34:40, with Emily Smith close behind in 3rd position with a time of 35:00. Imogen and Emily, along with Isobel Gowers won the first female team.
The first male strider home was Chris Sewell in a time of 40:19.
As this was the 5 mile club championship race, Imogen and Chris have won the club championships titles. Congratulations to both of you!

Essex XC Relays – Saturday 16th September
A hot, sunny day at Weald Park in Brentwood set the scene for the first XC of the season. We entered three ladies teams (one senior, one V40 and one V50 team) and five men’s teams (one senior, two V40, one V50 and one v60 team).
Congratulations to the V60 men for winning an Essex bronze medal for finishing third team in their age category.

Essex Way 2023 Round-Up
Blue skies and warm weather set the scene for the 2023 Essex Way Relay race on Sunday 3rd September. Springfield Striders entered eight teams across the ten stages of the 81-mile route, starting at Epping Station and finishing at the iconic Harwich Lighthouse. 76 Striders took part, meaning our club covered over 610 miles!
Our Men’s A team finished 7th overall, losing out to Grange Farm & Dunmow Runners, two Southend AC teams, Leigh on Sea RC, Billericay Striders and Benfleet RC. Our Ladies A team finished in 3rd position behind Southend AC and Leigh on Sea and our VETS team finished in 2nd position behind Leigh on Sea.

Friday Night 5k Success
Well done to everyone who ran in the 5km races at the Colchester Sports Park on Friday 11th August. Congratulations to Lee Martin (gold), Peter Chubb (silver) and Nikki Woodyard (silver) for winning Essex medals in their age categories.
