12 Striders took part in the Manchester Marathon this year. This is one of the best organised and flat marathons the author has ever done! The weather was perfect running conditions – cool and cloudy although the sun came out later on. First male Strider home was Alex Manton in 2.35.33 (actually in 39thposition), then James Sullivan in 2.38.42 and Zach Knill in 2.56.59. The Strider ladies were led by Laura Goode in 4.08.32, then Emily Penkett 4.29.14 and Madeline Turner 4.34.29. Great running from everyone who ran.
Further afield Mark Newton ran the Rotterdam marathon in a time of 2.27.29 and 48thplace, as well as being 2ndBrit.
In Bedford, Ian Cardy took part in the British Duathlon Championships and I can now say he is the British champion in the M55-59 category.
The previous weekend was the County 5 mile championships, organised by Braintree AC and starting and finishing at the Chelmsford racecourse. There was a great turn out of Striders and plenty of medals were won.
Liz Davies, is the county women’s champion and now holds a new club record of 27.50; Liz was also 1st v35. Lynn Tanner v65 county champion and Sheila Macaulay won the v65 bronze. The new U20 county champion is Jenny Chandler. The ladies team won gold with Liz, Jackie Stretton and Jennifer Lovelock.
For the men, Mark Newton won county bronze, and Chris purse v60 bronze. The men won a silver medal team prize, with Mark Newton, Paul Miles and Philip Smith
