Fun in the sun

Springfield Striders celebrated 25 years with a barbecue and trail race on Saturday. Club captain Anthony Marsh won at a canter then joined well over a hundred others for an enjoyable afternoon in the sun. With perfect timing the festivities finished just before the torrential rain arrived.

Lee Martin and Kate Mills were crowned club 5 mile champions at the Tilty Hilly race on Sunday in very muggy conditions. Stuart Putt and James Neugebauer joined Martin in claiming the team prize. Catherine and Darran Hull competed in the Staveley 17km trail race in the Lakes with Catherine beating her husband by seven minutes.

Nicole Callaghan travelled to the Whipsnade Zoo 10km and perhaps spurred on by the adjacent rhinos claimed a personal best.

At the Tiptree trail race on Sunday Jamie and Tracey Woodyard were first Striders back on an excellent course around Layer Marney.

This Friday the Striders host the eleventh running of their Friday Night Five (miles) from the Green Man at Howe Street.

Team Title at Broad Oak Retained

It is always an achievement to win a team prize at a well supported race and even better to retain it with almost a different group of runners the following year.

The on form Mark Newton transferred his Tuesday night talent to the roads with a PB and a fine sixth place finish in 33.24. Gary Chandler "fresh" from camping it up retained the over 40 title in 33.59 and these two were joined in the six man winning team by Chris Burgoyne, Mark Waine, James Neugebauer and Paul Anderson. The latter two both claiming PBs.

Kate Mills was the first Strider lady just ahead of Nikki Pyle and the first over 55 lady Lynn Tanner. The ladies team finished fourth on the day. 40 Striders ran this popular race.

Hot, Secret and Windy

The Striders have been on the trails in the last week at three different trail races.

The Felsted trail race, which was run in blazing conditions, saw Mark Waine win the shorter distance without falling flat on his face and captain Anthony Marsh was a fine third. The top Strider lady was as usual Tracey Woodyard. In the longer run the top Striders were Darren Coates and Tracey Alexandrou.

Last Saturday two Striders managed to find out about a Thrift Green Trotters trail race from one of our regular pub run pubs the Viper. Jamie Woodyard and Anthony Marsh thought that the route was excellent and we will use it for a pub run later this summer. Apparently the results are also being kept a secret.

This Sunday it was the countryside around Duton Hill that saw two races and there was also an excellent beer festival at the local pub. The closure of two footbridges meant that there was quite a bit of turning back on oneself and those that did not read their instructions carefully were likely to go off course although they were still on the course if you see what I mean. You had to be there. The strong wind sent you off at a rate of knots but of course you had to struggle back against it. Some very nice paths and deep ditches were negotiated by all with the top Striders being Darren Coates again in the longer run and Roger Gooding (2nd) in the 7 miler. Top ladies were Kerry Marsh and Katherine Hull.

There are plenty more trails in the offing with the three legged trail at Rayne on Wednesday, the Striders birthday trail next Saturday and a Tiptree race on the Sunday.
