News Update

It was a bright warm and sunny day for our own Pleshey and Essex Half Marathon on Sunday which proved to be a trifle warm for lots of runners, although pleasant for spectators and marshalls. A total of 551 runners entered but only 434 took part on the day; 40 of whom were Springfield Striders. However, an army of marshalls and helpers for Paul and Ian behind the scenes ensured that the race was the success it is.

Striders men filled 7 of the top ten places in the race.

Paul Molyneux was first man and first Strider in a time of 68.55, followed by 2nd placed man Frankie Conway from Orion in 71.05 and 3rd was Mark Newton in 74.27. With Chris Burgoyne on 4th, the Strider men took first male team and therefore county team champions.

The men also nabbed the second male team prize with Alex Manton Russell Davies and Pete Robinson who came 5th 8th and 9th respectively.

There were also further medals for the men; Russell Davies took 2nd MV40, Stuart Raven 3rd MV40, Paul Dobson 3rd MV50 and David Smith 2nd MV60.

The ladies race was won by Rachel Sweatt from Witham RC in 1.25.49, followed by 2nd lady Nikki Brockbank in 1.29.25 and 3rd lady Jackie Stretton in 1.29.34. Together with Emily Smith, the ladies took 1st ladies team and thus county female champions.

Essex Vets

A beautifully crisp Saturday morning over at Writtle greeted runners in the Essex Vets championships, moving from its previous venue. This year, the event was hosted by Springfield Striders, so an interesting course with plenty of features was expected plus the most encouraging and friendly marshalls! There was a bit of mud, a twisty course, a stream and some parts where you needed to be careful around the lake.

V35 ladies ran with the v50 and over men; Striders had 14 ladies and 8 men in these categories. The combined total of runners from all clubs in this race was 234.

Liz Davies did us proud by coming in as first lady, and with Sam Bilbie, Kate Mills and Emily Smith the ladies picked up 2nd ladies team.

Remembrance Sunday

The event of the weekend on a beautiful sunny Sunday morning was the Hobble, organised by Kevin, with options of 13.4 or 6.6 miles. This year the long route took runners to Margaretting and thereabouts. This is very popular with Striders and 43 took part in the 13.4 mile route and 16 on the shorter route; with 12 other clubs also taking part. There was much confusion by some of the runners in one part of the course; not the organisers fault!

The first man on the long route was Allen Smalls of CHAC, quickly followed by clubmate Sean Ketteridge. Chris Burgoyne was first Strider in 3rd..First lady on the long course was June Allen.
