Weekend running

Harwich runners hosted the Essex road relays on Saturday on Dovercourt seafront and this event attracted 95 teams from all around the county. A lot of the 5k run takes place along the promenade and luckily weather conditions were just cloudy; no rain, snow, sun or even wind; just cloudy.

In the men’s v50 event, Striders took silver with the team of Robin McCoy 18:2.02, Paul Broome 18:59.78 and Paul Dobson 17:31.82

The v45 ladies ran well with Rebecca Pitman 20:52.14, Nicki Ranson 22:6.08 and Donna Morris 23:22.88, securing the bronze medal.

A small selection of 5 Striders ran the muddy hilly Orion 15 through Epping Forest on Saturday

Jon Byford was first placed Strider in 55th 1.57.43

18 Striders completed the Colchester Half marathon on Sunday, a popular event starting and finishing at the Colchester United football stadium. First Strider was Antony Goodall in 22nd (1.20.14) with Alex Benson in 26th (1.20.53) and James Wright in 41st (1.21.29). First lady was Jackie Stretton in 1.23.38, followed by Catherine Hull in 1.41.42 and Donna Morris in 1.45.17. Jackie was 2nd Senior lady.

There was also a trail on Sunday – the Lamarsh Village hall trail with a choice of 6 or 9.75 miles. 3 Striders ran the 6 mile and 2 the 9.75 mile.

Further afield Alex Manton ran the Wymondham AC 20 mile race and came second in 1.57.28. Emily Penkett and Derek Dunne also ran this race; Derek was first in the M50-54 category.

Well done to everyone who ran at the weekend.

Great Bentley half

36 Striders; 17 women and 19 men, braved the cold for the Great Bentley half marathon on Sunday; Sharon has renamed it the Four Seasons half due to the different weather (snow, sun, sleet, bit of wind….) throughout the race. This is a very popular race which sold out in about 2 hours. It is a relatively flat course around the country roads near to Great Bentley.

First male strider was Chris Burgoyne in 4th place in a time of 1.13.53. Chris was followed by Alex Manton in 6th in 1.14.28 and Alex Benson in 1.20.28 and 29th place. Paul Dobson was 1st v50 in the race in 1.21.43. David Smith was 2nd v60 in 1.43.53.

The ladies picked up several prizes. Finishing in 2nd lady position was Jackie Stretton in 1.24.02 with Nikki Brockbank close behind in 3rd lady in 1.24.38. Third lady Strider was Sam Bilbie (5th lady) in 1.26.46 and together these ladies picked up the Gold team prize. Nikki was 2nd v35 and Sam 3rd v35. Rebecca Pittman was 1st v55 in 1.35.50 and Sharon Bannister 3rd v45 in 1.47.30.

Well done to everyone who ran and I hope you all enjoyed it.

Southerns XC

A handful of Striders made the trip to Stanmer Park in Brighton for this years’ Southern XC championships. The day started off sunny in Chelmsford then turned grey and cloudy and eventually drizzly which later turned to rain.

Due to injury or illness there were only 4 Strider women who ran their 2 lap, rather hilly, 8000m course in a field of 351; Liz Davies in an excellent 11th in 30.44, Elaine Tribley was next lady strider in 46.05, then Sharon Bannister in 47.52 and finally Sarah Goodwin in 57.36. A tough and testing course but enough for a ladies team ending up in 34th place.

The men’s race was longer at 3 laps and 15000m and by the start the rain had set in. We needed six to score and we didn’t have a full team in the end. In a field of 740 Sam Cornforth was our highest place man in 112th and ran 58.34. Steve Bugden ran 1.20.56 and Jon Byford 1.13.51.

Well done to everyone who ran.Â

Benfleet 15 - the big freeze

21 hardy Striders braved the snow, mud, wet, hills and general dampness at Benfleet 15, which is challenging in the best of weather and 11 women and 10 men Striders ran.

Winning the male Gold prize was Paul Molyneux in an excellent 1.28.58. Alex Manton took the bronze male prize in an equally excellent 1.34.09. Third Strider male was Robin McCoy in 1.53.30

Nikki Brockbank won Gold ladies prize in 1.46.52. Second strider lady was Jackie Stretton in 1.59.09 and third Strider lady was Kerry Marsh in 2.20.44.

I don’t think I am alone in saying that this was one of the coldest races I had ever done and for us “slower” runners being out in the cold/wet/snow for 2 ½ hours or more takes its toll. Well done to everyone who took part.
