Gathering Winter Fools Relay

The fell runners had another weekend to bring a smile, with a small band, not exactly the A team, taking part in this challenge event over 31 miles of the hills around Keighley. Paul Jeggo and Andy Mason ran the first, 9 mile leg, coming home in 12th place; Andy Stroud and Julian Catmull the second, and possibly most interesting and tough 9 miles, including a 2 mile killer mile up onto Ilkley Moor. Andy, wisely, took his hat. They were 9th on their leg, our best position of the day. The 3rd and shortest leg was taken by Janet Hill, bringing a quality to the team that could not be matched by our other runners, and John Williams, followed by Andy Jeggo and Paul Mason on the last leg. Enjoying the generous hospitality after the race, we were very pleasantly surprised to find ourselves among the prizes, as the first mixed team, out of ten; apparently we were not the only mixed team to have just 1 lady.  Overall we finished a creditable 11th of 26 teams in a time of 5h5m45s. The race may not be as tough as the Calderdale Way Relay, the traditional end of year fell event, but it is a good event, and one worth entering again.

Sunday saw 4 of the team taking part in the Dark & White Mini Mountain Marathon, a 4 hour score orienteering event around the slopes of Kinder. An ideal day to be out in the hills, reflecting on the success of the previous day.

For anyone interested in trying hill running, the Hadleigh Downs Race is on 31st December at 10am. More details can be found on the chatboard, in the fell section, and there is a route map in the Routes section.
