Senior Men, Vet Men & Vet Ladies Essex League Champions

A double header of Cross country this weekend with the final Essex League meeting with all to play for by Striders and our own Mid Essex league fixture at Highwood.

A cold and snowy morning at Basildon was the scene for the Essex league fixture where you might be mistaken in thinking that there wouldn’t be hills….of course there were!

12 Strider ladies braved the cold and were led by Liz Davies in 1st place; at least 30 seconds ahead of the second placed lady. Our second lady was Polly Bridgman in 20th, followed by Emily Smith in 25th; as these ladies are all vets they made up the vets scoring team and placed us first in this category. To make up the open teams (all categories) Vic Curren came in 28th, making this team 4th overall.

18 men took part in the later and longer men’s race. Paul Molyneux made a guest appearance for the club and took 5th place. Paul was backed up by James Smith in 9th, Tom Cammack in 13th, Greg Deacon in 19th, Alex Manton in 25th and Antony Goodall in 33rd, making them first on the day. The vets team of Greg Deacon, Antony Goodall, Paul Dobson and Seb McGuire took first place on the day too.

So, as this was the last fixture for this season, the final results for Striders are as follows:

Liz Davies 1st vet 35 lady

Vet ladies – 1st

Vet men – 1st

Senior men Div 1 – 1st

Fantastic results from this league from a running club as opposed to an athletic club, so a big well done to absolutely everyone who took part.

Onto Sunday and a field of 67 men (18 Striders) and 41 women (11 Striders) turned out on a cold and murky morning for this most enjoyable approx. 5 mile course around some fields, through some woods, through a couple of ditches, past friendly marshalls…..back for a cup of tea and cake served by the smiling helpers.

Our first man home was Chris Burgoyne in 4th, with Paul Miles (7TH), Alex Benson (11th), Chris Purse (14th), Jon Byford (15th) and Paul Stukas (27th) making up the scoring team. The men were 2nd on the day. The men’s race was won by James Bosher from GFDR, and the GFDR men were 1st on the day.

The ladies were led by Polly Bridgman in 4th, then Hilda O’Kelly (19th), Elaine Tribley (22nd) and Donna Hindle (23rd). The ladies were 3rd on the day. The ladies race was won by Helen Thomsett from LBRR, but the GFDR ladies also won on the day.

Well done to everyone who ran this weekend and a huge thank you to all helpers and marshalls; it goes to show what a diverse club we have and always supportive of all runners, whatever speed.
