Essex 20

Apparently there was snow forecast for the Essex 20, but this did not appear and it was a chilly but somewhat sunny morning, with some stiff breezes, especially over the fields. This is a very popular race and had sold out way before Christmas

There were 45 Strider finishers out of the total 394 runners with many winning county medals and several PBs.It's a tough race so well done to everyone who ran!

With Paul Molyneux pipped at the post into 2nd, thus winning him open man silver, this did not stop the Strider men claiming Essex Gold with Tom Cammack in 6th (Essex position) and Gavin Allen on 15th. Gavin also claimed the v40 silver after being beaten by Malcom Muir from Ilford.

The Strider ladies did well too; the ladies team of Jackie Stretton (9th Essex lady), Samantha Monk (23rd) and Rachel Roughan (31st) ensured them the silver Essex ladies team. Jackie also won the Essex open lady bronze.

And she’s done it again! Sheila Macauley can claim another club record for V65 lady for her run in 3hr 25.32 and she gained herself an Essex medal FV65 as well.

The Essex 20 also hosted the first inter-county invitational match for some years, teams from Essex, Kent, Suffolk, Cambs, Beds and Herts competed for the honours.

In the men's match fellow Essex team mates Paul Whitaker and Paul Molyneux quickly broke free and ran the entire 20 miles together with the younger Whitaker kicking in the last 400m to win by 5 seconds in a time on 1.47.03. Results in the Men's match were:

1st Essex 5:27:12
2nd Kent 5:38:36
3rd Cambridgeshire 6:02:43
4th Suffolk 6:09:59
5th Hertfordshire 6:26:02
Incomplete teams Bedfordshire

In the ladies match Bedfordshire's V45 Gill Fullen broke the course record with a fantastic 2:07.23 but alas had no team mates to back her up. It was therefore left to Kent ladies to win the ladies match.

Results in the Woman's match were:

1st Kent 6:42:12
2nd Essex 6:54:52
3rd Hertfordshire 7:27:09
4th Suffolk 7:40:41
Incomplete teams Cambs and Beds
