Valentines at Writtle 53-12 XC

Sunday was the first Springfield Striders 53-12 at a new course in Writtle. Being Valentine’s day, Greg Deacon and Kevin had incorporated a heart shaped track into the course. The day was bitterly cold, with a cold wind but the event was well attended by both juniors and Seniors.

First junior strider home was Mathew Davies in the u17 age group in 21st. Lawrence Martin was next in 22nd in u11 and was third in his category. Lawrence was followed by Dylan Robins in 30th, Grecoy Martin in 33rd, Bryce Bannister in 36th, Tyrone Furnell in 50th, Taylor Gooding 57th and Oliver Hitching 88th. The juniors are now 6th in the table with one more race to go.

An error with the scoring discs could have meant chaos (i.e. they were forgotten) but this was handled with a workaround.

Eight ladies ran for Striders: first lady home was Sarah Colbert in 11th, then Hilda O’Kelly in 43rd, Louise Baines in 44th, and Elaine Tribley in 47th completing the scoring team. Some great runs by Deborah Hitching 58th, Vicki Robins 62nd, Kelly Turk 70th and Jodie Matthams 73rd completed the ladies team. The ladies were 6th on the day.

The men fielded a team of 28, with a great spread of runners. James Smith was our first man in 3rd, followed by the rest of the scoring team of Gavin Allen 4th, Chris Burgoyne 7th, Lee Martin 8th, Stuart Raven 9th, Greg Deacon 15th, Scott Dryden 24th and Antony Goodall 29th, ensuring that the men were first on the day.

Overall Striders are now 3rd in the league and we need to pull out all the stops at the final fixture at Ipswich on 28th February.

A great big thank you to all who helped marshalling, setting up, serving refreshments or in any other ways, and to those who ran. It’s you who help make the events the success that they are.
